What Is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of organs, tissues, and blood vessels. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound involves zero ionizing radiation.

What Can an Ultrasound Scan Detect?

Ultrasound scans are widely used for early detection and ongoing monitoring of various medical conditions, including:

  • Abdominal & Pelvic: Gallstones, liver disease, kidney stones, ovarian cysts, and uterine fibroids.
  • Small Parts: Thyroid nodules and breast lumps or cysts.
  • Vascular & Men’s Health: Enlarged prostate, heart conditions, and blood vessel issues.

At Shinagawa Diagnostic, ultrasound is a foundational tool incorporated through our health checkups to support early detection and proactive healthcare management.

Important Note: A doctor’s request is required before undergoing an ultrasound scan. If you do not have a referral, you may schedule a consultation with us to obtain one.

How Do I Make An Appointment?

Frequently asked questions

You need to secure a doctor’s request before undergoing an ultrasound procedure. This ensures that the procedure is appropriate for your health condition. If you do not have a request, you may consult with our doctors at Shinagawa. Once the doctor’s request is secured, you can proceed with the procedure.

The minimum examination time for an ultrasound is 5 minutes, but it may take longer depending on the body part being examined.

Some ultrasound procedures, such as Upper Abdominal Ultrasound and Whole Abdominal Ultrasound, require 6 hours of fasting, while others require no special preparation. Don’t worry—your Patient Care Line Agent will inform you of the necessary preparations before your appointment, and your Medical Coordinator will guide you through the process.

An ultrasound is an excellent tool for preventive care, especially for individuals with chronic health conditions. However, to determine whether it is necessary for your specific condition, we recommend consulting with our doctor first to secure a doctor’s request.

An ultrasound is a quick and non-invasive procedure. However, some tests may cause slight discomfort. Don’t worry—our Medical Team will inform you of any potential discomfort before your procedure.
