What Is a Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy?

A gastroscopy and colonoscopy is a combined endoscopic procedure that allows a specialist to examine your entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract in a single session.

  • Gastroscopy: Examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (upper GI).
  • Colonoscopy: Evaluates the colon and rectum (lower GI).

By combining both, patients can get a comprehensive digestive health assessment under a single sedation, making it a highly convenient, efficient option for professionals and individuals living or working around Bonifacio Global City.

How Many Hours of Fasting Are Required?

Patients must fast for at least 6 to 8 hours before the procedure. In addition, you will need to complete a bowel preparation routine the day before to ensure the colon is completely clear for an accurate examination.

Our clinic will provide specific bowel prep instructions prior to your scheduled appointment. Following these carefully is critical for your safety under sedation.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The combined procedure typically takes around 60 minutes, depending on what the doctor finds. Note on Polyp Removal: As a preventive health diagnostic center, please note that removing polyps (polypectomy) during the screening depends on the polyp’s size, location, and your specific medical history.

What to Expect During Your Screening

  • Before: Your medical history is reviewed, and sedation is administered for your comfort.

Please note: A Cardio-Pulmonary (CP) Clearance is required if prescribed by your doctor, and is mandatory for all patients aged 35 and above with existing comorbidities.

  • During: The doctor performs the gastroscopy first, followed by the colonoscopy. If needed, minor tissue samples (biopsies) or polyps will be removed for testing.
  • After: You will rest in our recovery area until the sedation wears off. Because sedation is used, you must bring a companion to accompany you home after your appointment.

The procedure itself is not painful, as sedation is administered. However, patients may experience a sore throat, bloating, or mild abdominal discomfort after the procedure.

This procedure is recommended for individuals aged 45 and above, especially those seeking a comprehensive digestive health screening or requiring a detailed examination of the stomach and colon.

Pediatric patients are generally not recommended to undergo this procedure unless specifically advised by a doctor.

Patients must secure a Cardio-Pulmonary (CP) Clearance and undergo bowel preparation as prescribed by the doctor. A fasting period of 6–8 hours is required, and it’s important to avoid meat, vegetables, and oatmeal during the preparation period.

Note: All patients aged 35 and above with comorbidities are required to secure CP Clearance.

Results and consultation with the gastroenterologist are typically provided on the same day as the procedure.
